Understanding Legal Notices

9 September 20261 min readBy Wambo Muyala & Co. Advocates

Received a demand letter or legal notice? Here is how to approach it calmly and sensibly.

Receiving a legal notice or demand letter can be alarming, but it is usually the start of a process, not the end of one.

Read it carefully

Identify who has sent it, what they say you owe or must do, and by what date they expect a response.

Do not ignore it

Ignoring a notice can limit your options. Even if you disagree with it, a considered response is usually better than silence.

Gather the relevant documents

Collect agreements, receipts, messages and any other records related to the subject of the notice.

Get advice on the response

An advocate can explain what the notice means, assess your position and help you respond appropriately — whether that is disputing the claim, negotiating, or complying.

Avoid making admissions in haste

Be careful about what you say in informal replies, as statements can be relied on later.
